TED Talk: Sherry Turkle’s “Connected, but Alone?”

In Sherry Turkle’s “Connected, but Alone?”, she addressed a growing issue of losing conversations and replacing them with connections. We are able to make connections anywhere at any time with our phones, it takes away from a human experience. Turkle emphasizes that our smartphones have the ability to change us and she acknowledges that this could be a problem. She has observed that everyone wants to be alone together, meaning they want conversations and connections they need to be controlled by the individual. In the end Turkle encourages making safe spaces, to take a break from all the connections and conversations, for personal reflection. She recommends making rooms in the house phone free so you have connections with your family. Overall she believes that smartphones can be good if we use them effectively, otherwise they may turn into trouble.

  1. I believe that Sherry Turkle is right about losing conversations and having more connections, but at the same time, there are still conversations on social media. There are so many conversations going on, but not a lot of them are face to face like she is saying. Turkle states that, ” We’re getting used to a new way of being alone together. People want to be with each other, but also elsewhere — connected to all the different places they want to be.” This made an impression on me because because it’s true, we want to be with others but only in the way we see fit. I agree that it will become troublesome in the future.

    1. I agree with your point that it will become troublesome in the future but a good counterargument to this would be to talk about what are the affects of face to face conversations and how they compare to being connected online. Also I think that your quote need a little bit more background before, and that it need to be explained in your own words at the end so it adds originality !
