Reflection on Aging

Reflection on Aging

Throughout this course I have been able to reflect on how I will care for the older adult population. One thing that I really took away from this course is the importance of medication reconciliation especially in the older population. We had learned previously how multiple medications can cause polypharmacy, however I never realized how common it was and that over-the-counter medications can often cause interactions. After reviewing this unit, this became a priority for me in the future when caring for the older adult population.

I also realized how important it is to encourage independence. When the older population is dependent on others for care, it can often cause them to end up fully dependent on a daily basis. I had cared for a patient in a long-term care facility as a CNA and they were completely independent when I had started working there. By the time I had left the resident had become completely dependent because caregivers would not allow them to do tasks for themselves as they did not have “the patience or time” to observe or minimally assist them. When caring for the older population I will always remember to have patience and always encourage the patient to do as much as they possibly can.

After doing the Life Review Project I had gained a lot of insight regarding perspectives of others. When speaking with my grandmother for the project, I had never realized the kind of life she had growing up. I think this is extremely important to remember when caring for others in general, as you never know what they have going on or what they have been through in their life. I also learned that even though as you age, you will still always have goals. Whether it be being a great grandparent, or simply have goals to keep yourself active and healthy at an advanced age. All of these factors have influenced the way I will care for others and as well as reflecting on how I want to age throughout my life.
