Post-Interview Reflection

Post-Interview Reflection

What I learned from this interview is that leadership can be difficult and it is okay to step down and reevaluate. The charge nurse I had interviewed made it apparent that this position as a leader on the floor added a lot of stress into their life, resulting in a change of position to a different floor. The nurse that I had interviewed told me that there were many challenges of being a leader. Including not being respected, being dismissed, and sometimes not having the resources needed. This is something that surprised me as they were a leader on the unit I worked on, it was hard to believe that employees would treat them in such a way. What reinforced my knowledge about leadership was the response that being a leader takes time to build relationships, trust, and to be strong in situations where it seems that it is impossible. After this interview my admiration for this leader only grew. While balancing a family of 5 and working as a leader it amazed me at how incredibly this person was a able to work nights and care for their family. I will apply this knowledge as a student by understanding that anything is possible if you set your mind to it and that it’s okay to know your limits and step down if you need to.

  1. Nice reflection but a bit brief for the expectations for the assignment. Sometimes the best thing for self-care is to make change and it appears your interviewee did this for her own self protection. I am not sure if she has bitterness related to this change or if this was your interpretation of what she communicated, but I would be surprised that she would share those feelings. Hopefully, as you state your admiration for her grew, she shared enough positive insights that you can take into your own journey.
