Pre-Interview Reflection

Pre-Interview Reflection

Over the summer I was able to work with a great team of nurses on a Cardiac Unit. One RN in particular stood out to me and I have chosen her to interview because she has influenced the way I care for patients and what kind of nurse I want to become. She is a leader both as charge nurse on the PCU as well as on the floor. When she is the charge nurse she takes a greater responsibility in regards to the schedule, accepting and assigning patients to other nurses, and is also the person to go to when you have any questions. When she is working on the floor she demonstrates a great ability to be a leader by both completing her own work as well as assisting any time you need help. I am most interested to learn about how she manages home and work life because she is busy with three kids at home. I am also interested to learn about who influenced her as she was growing as a nurse. When I think of a leader I think of her because she is always there to listen, advocate, and educate. I admire the work she does and her positive attitude that she always tends to have. This kind of influence on the floor not only makes the shifts better, but it also influences how others around her look at different situations. Recently, she has left the Cardiac Unit in order to pursue a job in the ED because she felt that she wanted to keep all her skills sharp. Not only did this demonstrate the ability of self-care but it also showed an importance of keeping herself educated which is something that is extremely commendable in a leader. I look forward to learning more about her journey through nursing.

  1. Emma, you do a nice job explaining why you choose this person to interview, the qualities he/she demonstrated that are part of leadership, and lots of thought about what you want to learn from her in your interview. You reflection did not capture the difference between formal and informal leadership positions but otherwise, nice job.

Resume: very nice format, easy to read, lots of good information. Just a couple of suggestions: consider adding your CITI certificate, and consolidate your clinical rotations to make a 2-page resume. Don’t lose important information, but see if you can consolidate…remember potential employers are going to be reviewing hundreds of resumes for new grad positions.
